What Do I need to know?

What do I need to know?

Due to the nature of custom newborn photography, a session should be scheduled prior to the baby’s birth.  In order to get those special newborn images, sessions are done during the first 2 weeks of life.  Expect your session to last 2-3 hours. This provides plenty of time for feeding, changing, soothing and capturing those fleeting moments that change so quickly in the first few weeks of life.  I am trained in newborn photography, and take great pride in the ability to capture the miracle of that little life, while keeping safety my #1 priority at all times.

Try to keep your newborn awake and stimulated an hour or so prior to our session, and feed 30 mins prior, so they will be ready to fall asleep when you arrive.  Please bring your baby in a zip down onesie as they are easier to transition, and keep asleep after the car ride. My style is to photograph your newborn in their birthday suits.  Clothing can be awkward and it makes it more difficult for them to be posed. I will supply all of the props, but if there is something special that you would like to add into your session, you are always welcome to bring them with you. Do not worry if the baby has accidents, it happens at every session, and everything is washable!  Please bring wipes, diapers, an outfit for taking them home, pacifier, formula if bottle feeding.  We will have plenty of time to nurse if needed, so do not worry if your baby needs to nurse.  Try your best to relax during the session as babies can sense if you are anxious.

The session will be held in my home in Natomas, CA.  My home will be very warm for your baby, to be able to do the traditional newborn shots, so be sure to dress in layers as we will be sweating lol.

When should I schedule my newborn session?

It is best to tentatively book your newborn session by your 5-6th month of pregnancy to make sure I am available when your little one arrives. It is best to photograph newborns within the first 2 weeks of life are usually the best for capturing newborns while they are still flexible enough to pose.  Older babies tend to sleep less soundly and are more likely to be colicky or have newborn acne.  Once your baby is born – call or email me and we will schedule your session within the first two weeks after birth.  Sessions are scheduled during the week at 9 a.m., as most babies do best in the earlier hours of the day.

If you want to bring a sibling to incorporate a sibling portrait, please have a family member bring them only for a short period of time.  In order to get best shots of your newborn, we need a quiet, calm environment.  The session will be focused on your newborn, but I will try to accommodate a casual family portrait, before baby is settled or after the newborn session is completed.

Thank you, and I look forward to working with your family
